Non Intendo Scrivere Un Adagio

-World Premiere: By the Old Bay New Music Ensemble in December 3rd, 2024

“Non Intendo Scrivere un Adagio” is an exploration and deconstruction of the tension between slowness and speed. In this work, slow musical elements are gradually eroded by more urgent and restless ones, creating a unique soundscape. Inspired by the aesthetics of “glitch,” the piece incorporates moments of disarray, akin to the short-circuiting of electronic devices, lending it an unstable quality. This “imperfection” forms the core of the music, as if a fractured reflection of a slow melody.

The “spring” element in the piece serves as a metaphor, symbolizing the tension and resistance of slower elements under the pressure of rapid, twisted energy. Just as a spring rebounds after being compressed, these “eroded” slow fragments persistently reappear, stubbornly resisting the onslaught of fast rhythms, creating a dynamic opposition.

“Non Intendo Scrivere un Adagio” is not only an exploration of slow melody but also a rethinking of musical temporality. The audience is drawn into a space where time struggles between rupture and continuity, as if surrounded by a constantly shifting soundscape. This sense of contradiction is at the heart of the piece—an intense yearning for eternal slowness, yet inevitably consumed by an unstoppable acceleration.
